I.
I wake up early on a Saturday morning and commute to the University. There isn't much people around during the weekends, it was an easy ride. At the second street, the jeepney stops and I step down from the rusty old thing and breathed fresh air. The leaves from the years old tree rustle and I hear some birds in the background. It reminded me of the rural landscape of my childhood.

The building sits in the far corner of the compound. I walk towards it with an umbrella at hand, humming to a song stuck in my head since I waked up. Oddly, it was Cosmic Love by Florence + The Machine today. I see a figure that gestures a wave at me and a slight smile. And this is how fourteen weeks of my Saturday mornings begin.

II.
We get clay from a black bag and start kneading it. I still haven't gotten around to kneading properly even today. I try to avoid it as much as possible. It is a laborious task, repetitive, and well, I'm just not patient enough and want to start forming pots already!

There are usually five students in the morning session. It is an odd thing to be with the company I have. My usual shyness awkwardness is accentuated by the presence of professors who, for today, become the students. Our facilitator, Anton, is also a guy almost my age.

He does a demo on the pottery wheel and we, his students, eagerly watch as he makes a ginger jar. I am not entirely new to pottery, I must tell you. But it always amaze me to see another person working with clay. A simple fascination at how one's way of doing things can be different from mine or from other potters I have known, and yet, it is still the same process of centering, opening, lifting and forming. It is in him though that I became more aware of the details that make a pot different or better from another. From a slight angle of the wooden rib, the placement of the fingers, the importance of a leveled pot, to the dryness of clay, it all mattered. A far cry from my mindset of "whatever goes". Unaware, it makes a habit out of me as the days go by.

III.
I walk the usual road to the ceramic studio. Truth be told, the wind in the campus blows a certain sadness that reminds me about an incident some years past. The University plays with my emotions. A street, a sound, a scene. I wanted to forget, but I still remember.

I work on my lump of clay and it doesn't follow. It might be that the clay is too soft and hasn't aged yet. Or it might be me that refused to grow up.

IV.
The mastery of this art form isn't about how long have you been doing it. To some, it comes naturally like they came straight out of an Anagama. Several years into ceramics and I still consider myself a beginner. My control over clay is still questionable and often inconsistent. Still so much to learn and improve! Today though, I managed to make four bowls with one casualty, this is enough to put a smile in my eyes.

V.
It was a mess all over, like a scene in an apocalyptic movie where the people have evacuated the city. It was the Lantern Parade the day before, which left the campus into a wasteland of flying fish, horses, wrecked ships and gigantic paper cockroaches. Only two students came today this quiet Saturday morning. Anton reads a book while we go about our business with mud. The other student plays her songs on speaker. I made my pots. One. Two. Three... The time came by fast and we had to say goodbye. Only today, the chapter ends. Oh, if only this goes for one more hour or day or month.

I walked out the studio and hear the rustle of leaves from years-old trees. I looked back and smiled.

Note: I don't know why I didn't take blog-worthy pictures for this but we do live first before writing, yes? I hope the narrative is adequate to let your visual imagination work. Sorry for the grammar inconsistencies, I am not a good writer :)

...To sing a carol
This week feels like Christmas. I'm very happy to get my ceramic pieces from the two studios I'm working on! One is at Clay Ave Pottery Studio in Katipunan and the other one at UP College of Fine Arts. Clay Ave fires a gas kiln while UP used a wood-fired kiln for our workshop. I love how different the outcomes are! My labor of love :)

And here are the rest of it.

I have this affair with sea things

I am still wondering why I keep coming back to make more and more pottery. My present mantra is to just go with the flow, and for some reason, I keep coming back to the studio to work my way into clay. I don't really have a certain idea what I want to make for the day when I make my pieces. Sometimes, the clay just talks to me and ta-dah! This is the result. And I'm happy with just that. What I realized at most is that pottery is a form of meditation for me. It is a sort of prayer, and in prayer comes a moment of peace.

Also, I love how the sky looks like this time of the year. Do you see it too?

Part One here
Part two of our trip at the Pettyjohn's home at Laguna. I want to show how beautiful their pieces are.
This is at their gallery/ showroom

Guitar out of slabs!

I love Tessy's works. I will marry her pots if that's possible! They look like sea things!!

Jon's old works

A work of another artist. I forgot her name.

And this from Kuya Sammy. I love their glaze colors!

I'm really in love with this style.

After the tour, lunchtime!
There was an assortment of food we brought,,
From Vicky and Francis' Kulawo, to Mrs. Pettyjohn's Binakol Soup to Mrs. Kitami's Onigiri (rice balls)
We also ate from the Pettyjohn's own handmade dinnerware!
It just feels good eating on handmade plate and bowls and having a good conversation with awesome people.

Then a sidetrip to the top of the mountain for a view of Laguna!

This is like the cherry on top.

Thank you to Jon and Tessy Pettyjohn for sharing your home with us!
Also to Mia Casal for arranging this trip!
This is one perfect weekend.

11.24.2012. Saturday. 4 am.

I woke up early and I couldn't sleep anymore. I was very much excited for our fieldtrip to the home of potters, Jon and his wife, Tessy Pettyjohn. They are considered as the Mom and Dad of Philippine Pottery and it is definitely a privilege for a keen pottery enthusiast like me to take a look at their workplace! Their compound is located in Calamba, Laguna just less than two (2) hours aways from Manila.

Dividing the trip into two parts. First one is a tour at their studio where the processes happen.

This is a Shozo-inspired vessel. I really like this style

This is Jon's workplace

He gave us a demo on how to form pots off the hump and how to create different forms.
He truly is a Master Potter! Three kilos in a jiff. Amazing. And a plate in less than a minute. I can't even!

Amazing guy, he is.

Chemicals used for the glazes.

Bisque pots. I love their toppled-vase-turned teapot.

He also showed us his Anagama or cave kiln. Takes about two to three days of fueling with wood. I learn to appreciate the value of ceramics more,, all that energy and effort! He only fires it three times a year at most.

This is their dog, Ulap. He's a Great Dane. I love him.

And more pots!

Mabubulaklak na Dila: Ang InK's 21st Annual Exhibition
I've posted about this exhibit a week ago here, I just want to share my piece :)
My sawikain or idiom was "Di Makabasag Pinggan" which literally translates to "can't break a platter/ plate" Figuratively speaking, it means demure or a prim-and-proper person.

I actually made two versions. I didn't submit the Gazelle for the exhibit because there is something off with her arms.

You can still view artworks from 50+ InK members
at CANVAS Gallery, Upsilon Drive, Diliman, QC til Nov. 30, 2012
(by appointment)

Pottery Update:
I'm currently experimenting on ceramic decals. I'm not sure if this is acceptable practice but I painted directly on the decal paper as opposed to printing it on inkjet printer because apparently, printers don't have white ink.  I could have just drawn directly on the pot too, I know.

(I can't get the picture to rotate for some reason)

I love Mondays.
Especially just hanging around with my dogs. It's usually grooming day.

I also just recently discovered Derwent Inktense Pencils
I'm not really sure if they are considered watercolor pencils but they work the same way.
And they work absolutely fab! I like how you can overlap colors like you would in normal watercolor and how you can produce a more vibrant shade by applying wet-on-wet
(Tho I'm not sure it's the proper way of using it. Ha)

I have been also trying (!) to do sketches daily. Mostly portrait shots.
Pardon the crappy images, tho. Just shot with a cam & I couldn't edit with Photoshop.
Excuses. Shame

Mermaid.

Also tried sketching Andrej Pejic. He's my current favorite person right now! My love for androgyny is restored  :)

I've been drawing the whole month of October. My hands are currently shaky as I type
(maybe because of arthritis or it's just itching to draw more)
I feel so alive today. The sunset was beautiful parallel the full moon rising. I am at peace.

A lot of things are coming up for the end months as well! I'm excited!

Mabubulaklak na Dila.
Ang Ink's 21st Annual Exhibit is on Nov. 16 - 30, 2012 at the Canvas  Gallery.
This year's theme is "sawikain" or idioms in Tagalog. It's my first time to join Ilustrador ng Kabataan's annual exhibition. So friends, it would be great if you could come during the opening night on the 16th!
Artwork by Rommel Joson

Concept art for a mobile app.

Bleeding Heart.
It's also my first time to illustrate for a children's book! I'll update this some other time

And my pots have also come out from the kiln! Hurray!
I'm also back to being a pottery student. This time, at the UP Fine Arts.
Trying to learn how to make better pots!

Awesome year this is. God is good.

Pending reading list: Luka and the Fire of Life by Salman Rushdie + Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Easy reads for this month :)

Juan Tamad

Isinangguni niya
sa kataas-taasan
ang kanyang kahirapan

at ang tugon sa
kanya ay

maghintay.

---

Ano ang nangyari?
Sa isang iglap,
ang panyong tinago ng
majikero
ay napalitan ng kuneho,
na hindi niya
mapigilan sa pagdami.

Ano na't ang maikling katuwaan
ay napalitan ng delubyo?

Sino ngayon
ang naghahabol?

---

When we sliced the
corpses of men for
longer life, we have already
played God.

---
...and we who Claimed
are left to become inevitable dust and dirt
kissing the ground from losses.

Just some random stuff I write on my journal. I don't really have a specific theme for my 'poetry' nor follow the rules. I just write whatever comes to mind.

-----
SLE

The heat of the sun burns my face red
Pricking inside the flesh
Eating the core til I fall hard on my knees
and pray for dear life.

Fate should have burned me alive
And let me feel the pain
Than set me on a bed
Like a rotting piece of meat.

----
A calm breathing
Slowly
She pulls herself up
And came closer
Near
The rabbit hole

---

here we go

somewhere only we know
where alien winds
engulf our very soul

wings on our feet
let no footstep be heard
as we sneak out from sleep

and hearts gold,
a rich-colored life,
let this story shine.

Antera

The sprites took your breathe
Swift as the sun sets
And I, oblivious
Of such fate in their hands,
Decided to laugh.

Why in such dire circumstance
have I placed Humor?
When all have wept and bled?
Do not let grief disguise
For a lifetime.

The Emotion manifests itself
Seeping through crevices,

Filling every flesh and nerve and bone
Keeping the Soul alive
--
Acknowledge its presence
Do you know its true name?
She is (and) She is not
Still beautiful

--

Sometimes I feel too much
This kiss of life and death
I am weak. I am vulnerable
Ever changing
A supernova
Scattered all over the place
I am no one yet I am everywhere.
Infinite. I am strong.

New blog layout. A cleaner look imo.
Also changing my profiles in a bit.

and a self-indulgent post. Well, this is my personal blog.
I don't think I've ever posted a picture of myself upfront here. Probably some on the pottery wheel, my face down and what not but nothing really identifiable? I haven't even put my real name. I'm shy and also maybe slightly paranoid over some personal stuff. But I like people! Haha

{Edit: I removed my pictures here. I guess I do have a bit of paranoia in me. }

Moving on,,

I just recently joined Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan or InK. That is my entry illustration above :)

And here are some of my other works. Yay

That's it for now, Ciao!

Takatak Attack Exhibit at 10A Alabama St., QC.
Opening was held last Saturday, July 21, 2012. I braved that afternoon to get my taka submitted but didn't go to the opening that day. Instead, I went there on a less raining Sunday noon with two of my friends and had a hot cup of cocoa welcoming us.

Also, this is the first exhibit I've ever joined! Would you believe that? Milestone!! Hahaha
News: The takas will be at Alabama til Aug 13 and recently announced, that it will be at San Beda Museum from Aug 13 -31! So check it out if you have time.

Taka is a papier mache animal from Paete, Laguna.

 Quilted taka!
 Safari-themed!
 My own :)
 Lighting takas!
even flower takas! This one got a plant for a tail. Awesome works from different artists!

Here's a detail of my horses, Silence and Summer Islander (inspired by ships in ASoIaF. LOL)

Silence. Acrylic and white ink. Also inspired by indian henna designs & mandalas

Summer Islander. Acrylic. Inspired by aboriginal batik designs :)

My unfinished horses posing

WIP Note:
It has been raining for several days already. I'm currently cooking some ceramic works in the comfort of my own room whilst I sniff and cough up with the weather. And for a lack of a better theme, my artworks are rain-inspired. Haha. Will be posting them once they're fired in the kiln along with my other pieces! I've been saying this for the longest time, yes. I do hope you appreciate that ceramics takes a lot of time to make, and patience as well! Im also eager to see their final state ;) I also realized I havent had a 'proper' drawing/painting for a long long time. Will be going back to the drawing board and thinking chair this month and I hope something good comes out of it! Cheers~
